| family portraits: who doesn't love a surprise?! |
 |
|
|

I love my clients. Really, really adore them!
And one of my very favorite times of the year is when I get to see so many of my clients again .... at holiday card time!
It's so much fun seeing how much the kids have grown, to meet the newest additions to a family (many of my 'family' clients started as wedding clients!) and to meet and photograph new clients for the first time.
And I LOVE designing new holiday cards for them each year!
So, this year I decided to do something a little special. Unexpected. A 'thank you so much for asking me to document your families'.
I wanted to do something that would show them all year how much I appreciate them!
I sent out three separate batches of these and almost forgot to take a picture! Fortunately, I remembered just before I packed up the last set! |

It all started with a senior portrait session.....her brother's!
The first time I photographed Michelle was when she tagged along at her brother's senior portrait session a few years ago. As I recall, she had recently received some info about an upcoming pageant of some sort and thought it might be fun to try it out. I did a few photos of her and, well...as they say...the rest is history.
There's a wall at her home dedicated to ribbons and trophies. A scrapbook filled with photos and clippings. She's been in magazines and speaks about Marfan Syndrome in order to raise awareness. The list goes on and on.
And she's absolutely gorgeous......inside and out.
I've been fortunate to have, in a way, made a lot of this journey with Michelle and her mom. I photograph her pretty frequently and am touched every time they call me to do another series of photos for her portfolio. She's surrounded by photographers that she could pick and choose from but they keep coming back to me and I am so glad that they do.
I've been dying to get Michelle outside...to do 'my' type of session but the restrictions for the pageant portfolios and comp cards always seem to keep us inside the studio. My wish finally came true last week when her agent from Dynasty Models told her that she needed to have more natural images in her portfolio....less of the glamour and runway stuff. YAY! I was sooo excited to do this type of shoot with her!
Here are some from that snowy day session last week..... |

| choices & balance - an update! |
 |
|
|

After posting the previous entry "choices & balance" , I was overwhelmed with twitter 'retweets', facebook and blog comments and personal email messages and sideline conversations. You all not only confirmed and supported the decision I had made, you also proved to me, once again, that I am lucky to belong to such a phenomenal group of friends, family and colleagues. So many of us face the same family/work struggles and it's reassuring to know that we aren't alone in that battle.
I thought you might all like an update on the weekend!
It was, without a doubt, one of the most fantastic and memorable Labor Day weekends EVER. I saw Devan and Braeden play in a total of 7 games.....6 scheduled games and yes, one CHAMPIONSHIP game!
It was the first appearance for Braeden's team in this tournament and they fought hard and tough. The final outcome for their team was 0-2-1 but that really doesn't adequately represent the full picture. They tried their hardest and had fun and that's what matters most! The competition was tough and to come home with at least a tie was really quite an achievement!
A handsome bunch aren't they!? (Braeden is back row, last on right hand side) |

It was Devan's team's 5th and final appearance at this tournament. Chris has co-coached this team with Tim for all 5 years and have coached some of these girls every year since they first started playing. It's gone by fast....too fast.
They arrived as the defending champions from last year and I'm so very proud to say they left this year as champions once again! They were truly amazing to watch.....a powerful and dominant TEAM on the field.
And here they are.....(Devan is second from the left..giving the #1 sign!) |

After winning the game and shaking hands with the other team, they ran together in a line across the field to our sideline....smiling, laughing and celebrating...turned and ran back across yelling 'thank you' to all of the parents and fans there that cheered them on.
Like a giant mushball I stood there sobbing. So proud of them. So happy I was there. So overwhelmed by the fast pace that the years are flying by. |

I definitely made the right decision.

|

Hard to believe, but here we are getting ready to embark on another Labor Day weekend. For so many years, that has meant me heading to a wedding somewhere and my husband and kids heading to the Labor Day soccer tournament in NH. My daughter, Devan, has been playing in that tournament with her travel soccer club (coached by my husband and another devoted dad) and I've always missed it. Every. Single. Year.
It goes something like this: Early Saturday morning, Chris, Devan and Brogan head off to NH. I take Braeden to the home of another player on his soccer team so he can stay with them and go to his tournament here in Maine. And then I head out to a wedding. After each game, I get a voicemail message from either Devan or Braeden telling me the results and I listen to them when I get a chance. We eventually all make it back home and I get the complete stories of each game. And no, it does not take the place of being there. Not even close.
Last year changed everything. Not only did I realize that Devan only has one more year to play in the tournament based on her age, I received the following voicemail message:
"Hi Mom! Just wanted to tell you that WE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP!! We WON Mom! The score was 3-0! See you when we get home."
What Devan didn't tell me, but another parent did was that Devan scored all 3 goals. And I wasn't there.
Well this year I will be. After that phone call I made a choice. The minute I got home that weekend I walked over to my giant wall calendar where I have a visual master of what my schedule looks like for the current year and the next year. I took a big black sharpie and I crossed off Labor Day weekend.
I turned down probably a dozen or more requests to photograph weddings for this weekend because I am going to be there to see and cheer Devan and Braeden on at each of there games. I'll still be shooting but I'll be photographing soccer games instead of a wedding.
It wasn't easy to block off such a popular wedding date and turn down those weddings. I love what I do and I adore my clients.
But life is about choices and balance and I made the right decision. And this Labor Day weekend I'm going to be right where I belong. |

| book your holiday card session now! |
 |
|
|

I find it hard to believe that the calendar is being flipped over to September. Kids are going back to school, soccer and football have started and my calendar is going crazy! Weddings, senior portrait sessions, destination/on location portrait sessions and (yikes...is it really coming upon us so quickly??!) .....holiday card sessions!
I love love LOVE working on custom holiday cards each year. It's really one of my favorite products and I get so excited when I receive feedback from my clients about how much everyone loved their cards. The emails and phone calls I get from them about the comments they are receiving make me grin from ear to ear.
For examples of what I'm talking about, just take a look at the holiday card love after last year's holidays. The cards are creative, fun and different and they reach out to those important important people in your lives that you probably don't have the opportunity to connect with as much as you'd like to.
Yes, I love doing the holiday cards!
The problem I have is that each year I find myself in a position of having to say no to some that want to book sessions and it makes me feel terrible. However, as much as I would really like to accommodate everyone, there are only so many dates/times available and it doesn't always work out.
The best solution to this (so you don't find yourself without a booked session this year!)... is to BOOK A SESSION NOW. I have very few dates currently available in September, just a few more than that in October and some in November but they are going fast. Faster than normal in fact.
So, in order to motivate you to get your session scheduled now I am offering a little incentive. Those that book a family/child lifestyle portrait session before September 30th and order a set of custom holiday cards, will receive a complimentary 2010 calendar featuring 12 images from your session. This is a brand new product I am offering this year for the holiday season and they are fabulous!
Here's an example of what the months look like....

| Cute isn't it!? Call or email me and book that session before Sept. 10th! |

| destination wedding: tatyana and eral: four seasons resort : maui, hawaii |

This season is filled with reunions for me.....I've been photographing expanding families of past bride and groom clients and the weddings of siblings and friends. It's one of the best compliments a photographer can receive and I'm humbled by the word of mouth referrals. My favorite part of it all is getting to see them all again and spend more time with the families.
Tatyana and Eral's wedding at The Four Seasons Resort in Maui, Hawaii was no exception to that. I photographed Eral's brother Arman's wedding to Jen at The Spruce Point Inn in September 2007. It was a beautiful wedding with beautiful families...on the inside and out. You can imagine how thrilled I was to get an email from Eral inquiring as to my availability for his destination wedding to Tatyana in Maui, Hawaii!
Here is the gorgeous Tatyana....
|

| Mike took some of Arman and Eral just before the ceremony.... |

| The beauty and fragrance of the flowers in Hawaii is beyond compare.... |

| Kids make my job even MORE fun. LOVE them! |

| Really....need I say anything at all about this spot? |

| How much better could it possibly get?! |

| Eral's dad performed the ceremony. |

A local photographer, Mike Adrian, graciously offered to assist me at the wedding and got this fabulous shot. Thank you SO much for helping me out Mike! You were fun to work with!
|

| This is Tatyana's grandmother "Babushka". Love her AND the name!! She flew all the way over from the Ukraine to see her granddaughter get married. She didn't speak any english but the smile she had on her face the whole day needed no translation. |

| The cake had the same flower detail as the wedding dress.... |

| The front lawn of the Four Seasons after the wedding ceremony was over and the reception was set up. The staff was amazing and turned it all over in no time at all! |

| Arman and Eral's family. I adore them and so wish they had more kids that I could do weddings for! Guess I'll just have to wait for some extended family weddings or...the next generation!! ;) |

| Like I said....no translation needed. This is the type of shot that says it all to me. |

| Taking a break from the group to do some portraits of the two of them... |

| Every time Tatyana looked at Eral you could feel the love she has for him. Her eyes are incredibly expressive and it was a beautiful thing to witness and document. |

| And Eral looked at Tatyana with the same love and adoration... |

| The waves came in faster than anticipated.... |

| They never stopped smiling or laughing. |

| I was eyeing a set of stairs that was closed off and required jumping over a wall to get to because I wanted an overall shot of the reception location. Mike came to my rescue before I started to scale the wall myself and took this. Thanks Mike! |

| Jen and Arman were "Bride" and "Groom" the first time I met them. At this wedding they were "Woman" and "Dude"! |

| Before Mike left for the evening he took this photo of Jen and Arman, Eral and Tatyana, and me. I am not a big fan of being on 'that side' of the camera but couldn't say no to having a photo with these four! |

I want to say a little more about The Four Seasons Resort. Obviously, I work with many different resorts, wedding professionals, etc... And, like everything, some are better than others at what they do. This particular Four Seasons was among the very best. The location is breathtaking and the service beyond extraordinary. Everything was seamless. I believe a great deal of that was because of their wonderful wedding coordinator, Carin Seim. From my first contact with her, I knew that Carin was not only a professional, but also a great person. I really enjoyed working with her and appreciated the care that she took with everything. If you are considering a wedding in Maui, you should definitely contact them.
