Goodbye April....Hello May!!
  May.01.2010

April was, without a doubt, one of the most tumultuous months I think I've ever experienced. Many of you know the story but for those of you that don't and wonder why I haven't posted in awhile here you go....

It started out the same as any other month for me....filled with work and family duties. Portrait sessions, wedding bookings, print and album orders, lacrosse signups, hockey tryouts, etc..etc.

And then my daughter Devan and I were in a car crash.

We are okay. We were sore and definitely shaken up but okay.

We were coming home from her hockey tryouts and in the center lane going south. A guy in the right hand lane decided to turn left.... into us. Hit our right side tire/front area just right that he flipped us up and we pivoted up onto the front corner of the vehicle and crashed down onto the driver's side. Kind of like a cartwheel.

The car truly cocooned us and protected us with the side air curtains, etc... Devan was hanging above me in her seatbelt and I could feel the pavement under my left arm. Very surreal.

She was screaming "Mommy mommy mommy" and "Mommy are you alright? PROMISE me you're alright". I guess
when we came to a stop I was facing the pavement so she couldn't see my face and it really frightened her. I just kept saying 'we're okay we're okay" over and over again to her and asking her if she was okay.

OnStar started talking to us at the same time that a bunch of witnesses to the crash started trying to get us out. Devan pushed the button to open the sunroof and a girl climbed in, unbuckled Devan and we fed her out through the sunroof. I climbed out after that.

There were emergency vehicles everywhere by then. They closed the road, re-routing traffic, etc.....

Amazingly enough, Devan and I walked out of the crash with 2 sprained fingers (Devan's...we think the air bag jammed her hand) and an assortment of aches, pains and bruises. We are also a little more squeemish in the car than normal and I seem to be reliving it in my mind more often than I'd like to. But I'm not complaining. It could have been so much worse.

Not even a week later we were scheduled for our annual trip to Florida for Spring Break. Unfortunately, for the first time ever, we decided we would drive instead of fly. Of course, that meant renting a vehicle since mine was declared a total loss. It also meant my poor husband had to put up with me clutching the door handle and gasping ALL the way there and ALL the way back. Definitely bad timing for that experiment!

As always, we did enjoy our time in Disney! We met friends there, relaxed and simply enjoyed being together. A much needed break.

And now we're back, it took an entire week but I found another vehicle so hopefully things will return to normal again.

I tried to keep up with everyone's email, phone calls etc...while this was all happening but if I missed you I apologize. Please email me/call me again!

published: MARTHA STEWART WEDDINGS !
  April.06.2010

Exciting news to share!

The wedding of Katie and Colman that I photographed last September is now being featured as a Real Wedding on MARTHA STEWART WEDDINGS!!

Katie and Colman are a couple very near and dear to my heart. I photographed Katie's sister Liz's wedding to John a few years ago, photographed another wedding of friends of theirs in Philadelphia the year before last, and then had the honor of photographing this wedding last year!

A VERY special thanks to my second photographer Scott and our very patient and attentive assistant Dianna!

What a great time we had! Can't wait for the next one! :)

I will be posting more images and information from Katie and Colman's wedding later. Until then, enjoy the feature on Martha Stewart Weddings and take a peek at .....

Lake Placid - CAN/AM Challenge Cup 2010
  April.05.2010

What an incredible experience!

The CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Lake Placid, NY was a great success and a whole lot of fun!

Our team, the Maine Outlaws, had a very strong showing in the tournament and brought home the silver medal! The relay team placed second, our goalie placed first in the shoot out and one of our players won an essay contest and received a week of hockey camp this summer in Lake Placid! Our team also had the honor of winning the President's Cup for Fair Play as the team with the least number of penalty minutes in the tournament.

Our medal game was against a premier team made up of Minnesota and Wisconsin kids that play together year round and travel throughout the country playing in tournaments. Heading into the medal round, they had outscored their opponents 32-0.

The Maine Outlaws changed that! Our team scored first in the game.....the very first team all weekend to score against them! The final outcome of the game gave the gold to the other team but we couldn't have been any prouder of these boys!

Here's the relay team after taking second place.....

In my last post I wrote a message to Braeden, mentioning that it would be nice to see him shoot and score from the blue line again in Lake Placid.

Well....he doesn't always listen to me but this time he did! The fact that he scored the goal on the 1980 "Miracle" ice made it even sweeter.

The history behind these rinks made a more 'vintage' black and white look an obvious choice.

Braeden and two of his teammate/friends with their silver medals....

If they had given out medals for the coolest hockey jerseys we would have taken home the gold! Our jerseys were the BEST!

We even went bobsledding while we were there. Sorry, but there aren't any photos from that. I was too busy hanging on for dear life and screaming like a little girl!!

out of studio: 3/31-4/5 : roadtrip to the 'miracle ice'
  March.31.2010

**Wanted to let you all know that I won't be very accessible by phone or by email over the next few days but will be sure to reply to everyone when I do return on Monday.**

We're heading out on a roadtrip tomorrow morning with a car packed with our bags, movies, snacks, hockey equipment ...and a VERY excited hockey player.

Braeden is playing in a hockey tournament this weekend in Lake Placid, NY. Home of the 'miracle ice'.....the olympic rink where the 1980 US Men's Hockey Team defeated the USSR and Finland to win the gold.

From proicehockey.about.com...

In a sporting culture that boasts figures like Babe Ruth and Jesse Owens, and institutions like the Yankees and Bears, it seems unlikely that a team of college hockey players would make a lasting impression.
But as 1999 drew to a close, most surveys declared the “Miracle On Ice” America's greatest sports achievement of the 20th century. A few years later it was immortalized by Hollywood in the movie Miracle.

“It may just be the single most indelible moment in all of U.S. sports history,” said Sports Illustrated of Team USA's improbable gold medal run at the 1980 Winter Olympics. “One that sent an entire nation into a frenzy.” American hockey came of age on February 22, 1980, when the young Americans took down the mighty Red Machine from the USSR.

It's not the actual Olympics and this team is comprised of 12 and 13 year olds. But the anticipation and thrill of skating on such a legendary sheet of ice is a close second to these kids and we can't wait!

Here's to the Pee Wee team, the Maine Outlaws (!), representing Maine at the tournament in Lake Placid! Let's bring home our very OWN gold!

And to you Braeden.....let's see a few more of these this weekend too! ;)

Good luck boys!!

march 28, 1997
  March.28.2010

13 years ago today, yet it may as well have been 13 months ago....the time seems to have flown by exactly that fast.

13 years ago today my husband said "It's Braeden Christopher" and I immediately asked "a boy or a girl?". He gave me a weird look and I said "I waited 40 weeks to hear the exact words "it's a boy" or "it's a girl"...you have to say it like that".

:)

13 years ago I peered down into beautiful blue eyes on a perfect baby boy.

Today I look UP at them. And instead of holding him in my arms, he leans his on my shoulders.

But he is STILL my little boy.

Happy Birthday Braeden. We love you so very much and are so proud of who you are.

it's been a LONG time coming....
  March.03.2010

...but it's finally done!! My brand spankin' new website!

And not JUST a new website mind you... there's also an entirely new logo, brand....presence!
FINALLY!

My website was long overdue for an update. In fact, it was ridiculous how long it had been since I had done anything with it so that was the obvious starting point. But, as I began working on it I realized that I wanted to do more than just change and update the site. I wanted a brand new look...a brand new approach...a brand new, well, BRAND!

Don't get me wrong. I LOVED my old logo....the orange circle with my initials. (the one you'll continue to see on this blog until it gets it's own facelift!) But I was increasingly aware that I wasn't alone in liking that 'look'. I began to notice that everyone seemed to like that same look. In fact, I started to wonder if there were any photographers out there NOT using a colored circle with their name or initials in it! It's certainly a very nice and effective logo style, but I've always been one that likes to march to my own drummer (just ask my mom!) and having something that is used so much made me feel like I was part of a marching band...all wearing the same uniform. Ugh!

Definitely time for a change.

I decided to make a hard choice (and it was a hard one...I had grown pretty attached to the cute little bugger!) I set out to completely overhaul everything. Top to bottom. Bottom to top. I knew what approach I wanted to take and what I envisioned that would best represent my style, personality, vision, etc.... but I couldn't seem to get it out of my head and into something tangible.

That's when I did something very smart. I hired Luxcetera. The BEST decision ever! I adore them and love everything we've been working on. It's crazy how well they understand my ramblings and are able to take the visions from my head and turn them into concrete items.

The website is the first official, ready- to- be- shared piece of the new Stacey Kane brand! And I couldn't be happier with it!

Quick...take a peek now and be sure to let me know what you think! THE BRAND NEW STACEYKANE.COM

I can't wait to share the next batch of goodies..... :)
