holiday card love
  January.25.2009

Holiday cards are among my very favorite things to work on each year. I love them. I love photographing the families and the children. I love putting together the perfect card..the one that best represents who they are.... for them to send to their family and friends. And I'll confess, I LOVE hearing about all the gushing that the recipients bestow upon my clients when they receive the cards.

This year, after getting several messages from clients telling me how many comments they had received about their cards, I thought it might be fun to have a little promotion. I sent an email out to all of my clients that ordered holiday cards this year and asked them to put together all of the comments that they had received and send them to me. I would read through them and would select my favorite. That client would receive a complimentary portrait session and 25 holiday cards this Fall.

Wow. Little did I know what an overwhelming response I would get! Little did I know just how much people really do love receiving cards that stand out from others!

It was very difficult for me to choose my favorite comment. VERY difficult. So, I'm going to post a few of my favorites from those submitted along with the winner (s) You see, I couldn't pick just one. I tried. I even pulled in other opinions and that made it even worse. So.....here are my favorite FOUR!

First up is the Boulanger card. I've photographed this family on several occasions but this is the first year that we actually put together a card......

Here are my favorite comments from the batch that they submitted....

"Without a doubt, the best card of the year."
"I am annoyed I forgot to send one to my competitive neighbor."
"Truly enjoyed by our friend Lt. Joe Carilli, overseas in Iraq "

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up is the Spolar card. Twice a year I travel to Celebration/Orlando Florida area to do photo sessions with clients. This card is the result of the second session I've done with Jack. We had so much fun! I almost did cartwheels right there in the middle of the Boardwalk Resort in Disney when I saw Jack and his mom walking up with a tricycle in hand!

"This years Holiday Card for the Spolar’s was the best ever! It truly captured Jack’s childhood essence. And can I tell you the amount of accolades I received were numerous and truly was from anyone who received the card. "Many comments......like "best card we got this holiday season!" "It looks like a advertising firm created the card!" " We love Jack on the tricycle!!!" Jack’s Great Grandparents were thrilled with the card of Jack since they gifted him the traditional old school tricycle!! "
--------------------------------------------------------------------

And now, the Kinnaly card! This is another family that I have photographed on numerous occasions over the years. I've done 1 year portraits of each of the kids and designed storyboards and photo albums to commemorate that milestone for each one as well. Here is their 2009 card...

"Subject line was “You are the winners!”; email said, “Happy New Year! I've been meaning to send this email for some time. On behalf of the Langlois family I want to congratulate you on taking home the "Langlois 2008 Christmas Card of the Year" award! This coveted award is awarded to that person or family whose Christmas Card impresses Me and Michele the most. :) Your card was placed on top of all of the other cards we received this past holiday season and was pointed out to anyone perusing our cards. The whole family looked beautiful and happy and the setting/background/lighting was perfect...much like your little family! Congratulations again!”

"Your Christmas card was too much cuteness for a 41 cent stamp!“

“I usually cut out the photo from each of the cards for my fridge but I just couldn’t cut up your card!”

This part was particularly meaningful to me.....

"From us – we love working with you…even after being out of touch, we feel immediately familiar with you, and always confident that our photos and cards will reflect who we are and have us looking the best we can. Lighting and scene are the best (these are what truly differentiate you), let alone the simple story that many of the pictures tell about who we are or what funny little movements or faces our child is making at the time. I am so glad to have found someone to capture in pictures the little images I know my mind won’t retain!"

(Thank you guys! You know the feeling is mutual. I love photographing your family because, as I've told you time and time again......you 'get me' !! ;) )
--------------------------------------------------------------------

This next winner of great comments is the 2009 DiTrolio card! Where do I even start in explaining my relationship with this great family? (actually...I could do an entire post on just that! hmmmm.....) I first photographed Heather and Matt for their engagement session and then their wedding. When Alex came along I did a 'baby's first year' series with him, photographing him as a newborn, at 3 months, 6 months and one year. Little Molly joined the family this year and I've photographed her for the first in her 'baby's first year" series. It was from that session that their holiday card for this year was, pardon the pun, 'born'. It was definitely one of my favorite cards to design this year as it really truly depicts their family exactly as it is...peaceful at times, nutty at other times, blessed with humor, and always filled with love.

"I love the Christmas card! I think its THE most creative card that I've seen in a long time and it really shows Alex's personality as well as the many laughs that I'm sure you all have as a family!"

"The nose grabbing is officially awesome and should be encouraged throughout Alex's life."

"This is the best card I have ever seen. So creative!! What a beautiful family you have. Hope Christmas was a merry one!"

"OMGOMGOMGOMG!!! This is sooooo perfect for you guys!"

"This is the coolest. Since peace is probably too tall an order this year, I'll wish you some sanity!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

And last, but not least, my family's 2009 card. Of all the sessions I do and all the families and kids I photograph, my own children are, without question, the most difficult! I guess it may have something to do with growing up with a massive black lens staring at you all the time!! Thanks guys..... for letting Mom get at least enough for our card this year!

This was an accordian fold card so you'll have to use your imagination to understand how it looks in real life! This was the front/back....

and this was the inside of the card...

Congratulations to all the winners! I hope you enjoyed receiving all the comments as much as I enjoyed reading them!!

Thank you for making me smile!
