photogirls '09 - the recap
  March.29.2009

So, I'm finally back on East Coast time (for the most part anyway!) and thought I'd post a recap of my thoughts, etc...from the retreat with the Photogirls.

We are a group of 17 professional women photographers from across the country who met through our blogs. Our group, Photogirls, was formed to learn from each other and to share ideas! We shoot portraits, weddings and destination weddings throughout the world & together we've seen the good, the bad, and the most beautiful.

At a time when it seems as though almost every photographer is schlepping marketing yet another seminar/workshop/book/training dvds/*insert just about anything here*, it is beyond refreshing to get together with like-minded artists that share a love for photography that goes beyond the bottom line. The week we spend together each year is full of no holding back sharing of experiences, techniques, what's worked and what hasn't, stories and more. I walked away from the retreat this year with a mind spinning with ideas and a heart reinvested in the craft of photography. There were no egos, no "this is the way it should be done" and no positioning of one over another. It was simply a group that opened their hearts and minds and openly shared with one another. We stayed in a magnificent house on the coast of Oregon and we ate and drank like royalty....without emptying our wallets.

Now I'm sure there are some workshops out there that are well worth the time and investment. But...yeah, well....my experiences haven't come close to equalling the Photogirls!

I HIGHLY encourage other photographers to consider forming their own group to share and support one another. It can be done for a very nominal cost and I am confident you will find the return on investment will far surpass most seminars/workshops/online learning groups/etc...etc.... And I'm guessing that you'll walk away with a great sense of fulfillment that you'll carry with you until the next time. So go on......co-ordinate your own group and retreat and enjoy the benefits! You'll be so glad you did! (Be sure to let us know how it goes!)

So, without more jabbering from me, here are the Photogirls from the '09 Retreat!

Top Row: Adrienne Maples,Brooke Mayo,Kellie Kano,Melanie Litchfield,Khara Plicanic,Michele Waite

Bottom Row: Me, Jena Murray, Tania Lezak, Sara Brennan-Harrell, Rebecca Peters Haas, Melissa Jill
